Background of the study
Religious indoctrination has long been recognized as a powerful influence on political ideologies and behaviors. In Akure South, religious institutions actively impart doctrines that shape political perceptions and voter behavior. The infusion of religious messages into everyday political discourse often results in a heightened sense of moral responsibility, which can either empower political participation or limit independent political thought. Scholars argue that religious indoctrination may lead to polarized political attitudes, reinforcing partisan loyalties rather than encouraging critical engagement (Olatunji, 2023). Additionally, historical ties between religious institutions and political leadership have contributed to a distinctive local political culture (Balogun, 2024). Recent shifts in religious rhetoric indicate that the effect of such indoctrination on democratic participation is complex and multifaceted (Ademola, 2025). This study investigates how religious indoctrination influences political behavior in the region and seeks to understand whether such influence encourages active political participation or fosters bias.
Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged role of religious indoctrination in shaping political behavior, its precise impact on political participation in Akure South remains unclear. Divergent views exist, with some arguing that religious teachings enhance civic responsibility, while others believe they contribute to partisan bias and political apathy. This ambiguity creates challenges in designing interventions that balance religious influence with democratic engagement. The lack of localized, empirical data exacerbates the problem, hindering efforts to promote unbiased political participation. This study addresses the need to clarify these dynamics and their implications for democratic processes in the area.
